Pat Sadler Memorial Scholarship Program

For 13 years, Pat Sadler worked tirelessly to provide boys and young men a place to play baseball and learn about life. During that time, he and John Crawford grew the DSB Middle School League from 6 to 31 teams as well as added the popular Summer Wood Bat League. He also served as a League Director and coached numerous teams. He did all of this while also ensuring that the league stayed true to its mission of focusing on "the kids." DSB would not have the ability to have a positive impact on so many young people without the efforts of Mr. Sadler.

To honor Mr. Sadler and his many contributions to baseball in the community, in 2015 DSB established the Pat Sadler Memorial Scholarship Fund (“Fund”), whose mission is to support community players or teams who want to play baseball in a DSB league but cannot afford the costs associated with playing baseball.

Eligibility

Eligibility to receive monetary awards from the Fund will depend on the following criteria:

  • Community residence requirement: Players (or for teams, a majority of the players) whose primary residence is within the city limits of Dunwoody, Sandy Springs, Chamblee or Doraville; and
  • Household income requirement: Players (or for teams, a majority of the players) who are members of a household who qualifies for any benefits under the USDA’s National School Lunch Program for the current school year.

Note that players (or teams) must also meet the league eligibility guidelines set by the league (e.g., age) in order to participate in the league and receive any Fund award.

Fund Awards

Eligible players or teams can apply to the Fund for financial support of the following costs if incurred through baseball-related activities:

  • League fees
  • Uniforms, including baseball cleats
  • Player equipment (e.g., baseball bat, baseball glove, batting gloves, catcher’s equipment)
  • Practice time rental fees (e.g., “cage time”)
  • Coach or instructor stipends

Any award amounts and eligible costs are determined solely by the Fund Review Committee and Committee decisions are considered final. Players or teams may be required to retain receipts or other proof of costs to qualify for any reimbursement.

Application Process

Players or teams who may be eligible and wish to apply to the Fund must email [email protected] to request an application. The Committee reserves the right to request further documentation in order to verify the accuracy and completeness of any application, including proof of any eligibility criteria. Players or teams who receive Fund awards may be asked to participate in press releases or other media announcements.

All applications will be considered confidential and any personal information will be redacted to the extent practical.

Players or teams may submit applications to the Fund only once per calendar year but are eligible for renewal within a calendar year (such as for a new league season) upon request and at the sole discretion of the Committee.
